SUPPLIES NEEDED:
*Composition Book (for taking notes) - Will leave in classroom if needed
*College ruled notebook paper for completing assignments (bring to class daily) - Business
Communications class only
*Pen and Pencil for taking notes/completing assignments (bring to class daily) - Assignments
must be completed in ink
*Highlighter (bring to class daily) - orange or yellow ONLY
Course Objectives:
- Define and use vocabulary terms related to technology and software applications
- Create, modify and format elements of various documents with MS Office (through performance skills)
- Integrate multiple software applications
- Use features of software appropriately by identifying the advantages and disadvantages of software in different situations
- Research the Internet to successfully obtain and validate accurate data
- Develop cooperative learning skills by working together to solve problems
- Develop strategies for learning software applications
Instructional Strategies and Course Standards:
The primary strategies used during this course consist of brief lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and practice of skills. Most of the student activities will consist of lecture and lab work using computer equipment for lab activities.
The instructor is available in the mornings from 6:30 – 7:00 and some afternoons from 2:15 to 2:45 p.m. (by appointment) for those students who need help or extra time with any work.
The course standards are included with the syllabus for parent review. These are the course standards for the entire State of Tennessee teachers that instruct a Computer Applications class.
Learning Expectations
Students will be expected to demonstrate the following student learning expectations:
- Read purposefully
- Communicate effectively
- Identify, analyze and solve problems
- Work independently and cooperatively with others
Expectations:
- ABSOLUTELY NO CELL PHONE USAGE IN THE CLASSROOM
- Be respectful of those around you and the classroom equipment.
- LISTEN--follow directions the first time! Do not talk when the teacher is instructing.
- Be in assigned seat and on task – you should be working on your assignment at the beginning of class without being asked to do so. All assignments are expected to be completed on time.
- Bring supplies to class everyday. Even though this is a computer-based course, you MUST bring paper and a writing utensil to class everyday!
- Severe problems will be referred to the appropriate administrator.
Make-up Work:
Any work missed with an excused absence can be made up; you will have one day for each day missed to make up work (please work out arrangements with the teacher about makeup work when more than one day is missed). IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO FIND OUT THE WORK MISSED. If you are assigned to ISS your classwork will be sent to the ISS room for you to complete. Work missed buring OSS can be made up based on the number of days you were on OSS, (5 days OSS = 5 days allowed to make up work). You will only be allow to receive no higher than a B grade for the work even if it is all correct. Grade will continue to drop a grade level for each day the classwork is not turned in.
Grading:
Along with daily work, you will be given various written and production tests during the grading period. If your work is turned in past the due date, 10 points will be deducted per day. Your grade for each semester will be determined as follows:
Grades are calculated on a points system. If you maintain high points/possible points then you should maintain a good grade. (EX: 90/100 = 90% for a grade). Your grades will include:
Daily Work: Work keyed in class while learning concepts, completion of documents and other assignments in the class
Quiz: /Test: May be written, production (typed work), or projects. Comprehensive test (written and/or production)
To be successful in this class, you should also remember the following:
- no food or drinks allowed in the classroom and especially at workstation
- no writing on machines, covers, books, or tables
- do not unplug anything unless told otherwise
- do not "play" with machines or change software in any way
- put all trash in appropriate place
- keep your work area neat and clean
- keep all other supplies except for this class away from the workstation
- no sitting on countertops/desks
- make effective use of class time
- come to class everyday
NO COMPUTER GAMES WILL BE PLAYED IN THIS CLASSROOM!!!
I have read and understand the Syllabus for Ms. Gossett’s class. I have also reviewed the competencies for this class that have been included. I understand that improper use of the computers in any way can result in your being written up. This includes--but is not limited to--using software other than that assigned, logging onto the Internet without permission or class assignment, logging onto inappropriate Internet sites, printing anything personal without permission, changing screensavers, changing toolbars, etc. without permission.
